Using gaming technology in the classroom has been implemented at Languagelab since 2005.

Our purpose built English City at Languagelab (which uses Second Life as the delivery platform) provides students with real qualified native speaker teachers and a host of "City People", instructors to practice what they have learned in classes or the language they already bring to English City.

There is for example someone who works at the Tourist Office, a bank clerk, a waitress along with more exciting characters like a composer who involves the students in musical pronunciation activities.

All of the locations in English City have been built with the CEF descriptors (Common European Framework) as a guideline and although all the interactions are student driven with student choice and gaming being at the forefront of the methodology, the interactions can be assessed and graded so the student can see their progress very easily. Languagelab is launching a new Spanish course at the end of this month, so the principles of gaming, immersive education and student choice are being used in La Ciudad - the Spanish City!
